Ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Election Observation Hub (EU-SDGN EOH) has requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prioritize transparency and operational readiness. Represented by Jake Epelle of TAF Africa and Brenda Anugwom of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund, the group emphasized the need for the timely arrival of voting materials to ensure polls open punctually at 8:30 am.
The observers specifically urged INEC to ensure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) functions effectively and that results are transmitted electronically to the IReV portal in real time. They advocated for the public release of detailed protocols regarding the transmission process, including the publication of all collation result sheets from Wards and Local Government Areas. This transparency, they noted, is essential for public verification of the outcomes.
Addressing the broader electoral environment, the group called on candidates and parties to honor the Peace Accord and settle any disputes strictly through legal channels. They condemned vote-buying and intimidation tactics. Furthermore, they urged security agencies to remain professional, neutral, and well-coordinated while ensuring the protection of critical infrastructure and transport routes.
Finally, the EU-SDGN EOH encouraged voters to participate independently and report any instances of malpractice. The media was also cautioned to verify facts and avoid spreading unconfirmed results to maintain order throughout the election cycle.
