All 36 state governors in Nigeria have pledged to make Early Childhood Development (ECD) a central focus for their regional administrations. Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), announced this renewed focus during a North-West Zonal consultative workshop held in partnership with the World Bank and federal planning agencies.
During a June 2026 meeting, the governors established that ECD is essential for enhancing long-term health, nutritional outcomes, and academic preparedness. Dr. Shittu, speaking through NGF spokesperson Mallam Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, emphasized that ECD must be treated as a major economic requirement for the nation’s future rather than a niche intervention. He noted that the initial five years of life are critical for building the cognitive foundation necessary for future productivity.
The success of these initiatives relies on effective execution at the state and local levels. Dr. Shittu highlighted that because ECD is inherently multisectoral, various government departments must collaborate to ensure children thrive. The current workshop aims to help states transform policy goals into actionable, localized plans that account for specific regional needs and institutional capabilities.
Dr. Shittu cautioned that planning is only the first step. He stressed the importance of sustainable financing, clear accountability, and the integration of these initiatives into existing state budgets. The NGF intends to continue facilitating peer-learning and supporting states as they work to turn national priorities into measurable improvements for young citizens.
