Lawyers representing Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the 2024 killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, are scheduled to confer with federal prosecutors this Friday. This development follows news reports suggesting that a plea agreement may be in the works.
Mangione is currently charged with two federal stalking offenses that could result in a life sentence without the possibility of parole. While Jamie McDonald, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, confirmed that a meeting is set for 11 am Friday, officials have not disclosed which specific charges are being negotiated. Mangione has entered not guilty pleas in both his ongoing state and federal cases.
A potential plea bargain remains speculative and requires judicial approval. Prosecutors filed these stalking charges based on allegations that Mangione traveled and conducted surveillance to orchestrate the murder. A federal judge previously dismissed two other charges in January, including one that could have carried a death sentence.
Legal experts suggest that a guilty plea in federal court might provide Mangione’s defense team with grounds to challenge the pending state trial based on double jeopardy protections. Attorney Mitchell Epner noted that New York state law restricts the prosecution of cases already concluded at the federal level based on the same facts. Currently, Mangione’s state trial is slated for September 8, while the federal proceedings are set for January 2027.
