Fifa president Gianni Infantino is facing intense pressure after a controversial proposal to sell a portion of the organization’s commercial assets to a private firm was revealed. Although the deal was later scrapped, the move has jeopardized his prospects for a fourth term.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has formally revoked its backing for the Fifa leader. This follows an open letter from Uefa, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, which accused Infantino of acting with deception and breaking trust. The Welsh FA and the English FA had already rescinded their support in recent days.
In a statement, the FAI explained that its board decided to withdraw their previously issued letter of support. The association highlighted concerns regarding transparency and governance, noting that their own history of overcoming administrative challenges motivates them to promote better practices within the sport.
Meanwhile, the Irish Football Association (IFA) in Northern Ireland has expressed solidarity with Uefa’s position without formally withdrawing its own support for Infantino. An IFA spokesperson stated that the organization is monitoring the broader concerns within the football community and will continue to address these issues through established governance channels.
