The Kwara State Police Command has taken Sanda Aliyu into custody for allegedly attempting to purchase an AK-47 assault rifle for N1.6 million. The arrest occurred in Kaiama Local Government Area after police received intelligence regarding the transaction.
Officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Section apprehended Aliyu on August 3, 2026, while he was allegedly coordinating the illegal purchase with a man named Aliyu Mohammed, who remains a fugitive. State Police Spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that the suspect confessed to the scheme during questioning.
Aliyu reportedly stated that the N1.6 million payment for the weapon had already been finalized. His motive, as disclosed to investigators, was to increase his influence within his existing kidnapping ring to eventually form his own criminal group. Police are currently expanding the investigation to uncover the broader network and identify other participants involved in this illegal arms deal. Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi praised the success of the operation and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive intelligence-based policing throughout the state.
