K-Pop Star Choi Weesung Found Dead in His Home
Popular South Korean singer Wheesung has been found dead in his home at the age of 43.
The body of the K-pop star, whose real name is Choi Whee-sung, was reportedly discovered a “significant amount of time” after his passing, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police in Seoul stated that the singer was found in a state of cardiac arrest but noted there were no immediate signs of foul play.
According to local newspaper The Korea Times, Wheesung was discovered unconscious in his apartment in Seoul’s northern Gwangjin-gu district after emergency responders were called by his mother. Concerns were initially raised after he failed to meet his manager for a scheduled meeting earlier in the day.
Investigations into his death are ongoing.
Wheesung first debuted in 2002 and quickly rose to fame in South Korea for his distinctive soulful vocals. His popularity grew throughout the 2000s, and he is widely credited with helping to popularize R&B in the country.
Over the past decade, Wheesung established himself as a mentor and vocal coach to many K-pop stars. He was even scheduled to perform in a concert with ballad singer KCM this weekend in the city of Daegu.
Following the news of his passing, fellow artists have paid heartfelt tributes to the late singer.
In recent years, Wheesung faced several controversies. In 2021, he received a two-year suspended sentence for the misuse of the powerful anesthetic propofol. Additionally, in March and April 2020, he was found unconscious on two separate occasions due to the use of similar sleep-inducing drugs.
