Malawi has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for their inaugural Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. On Wednesday, the team secured a 3-1 win against Algeria at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The match was characterized by intense physicality, resulting in both teams losing a player to red cards during the opening half. The first ejection occurred early on, followed by an Algerian dismissal about 20 minutes later.
Even with both sides playing shorthanded, Malawi remained disciplined and effectively overcame their North African rivals. This victory adds to an impressive tournament performance, as the team had already guaranteed a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup by reaching the semi-finals.
Entering the match, both nations were vying to become the seventh country to reach a WAFCON final since 1998. Having previously defeated Ghana in the quarter-finals, Malawi now prepares for the championship match, marking the pinnacle of their debut continental appearance.
