Manchester City has finalized the acquisition of Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille. The 34-year-old has signed a two-year contract, marking his return to the Etihad Stadium following his tenure during the 2016-17 season. Reports indicate the transfer fee stands at £1.7m.
Rulli arrives to fill the vacancy left by James Trafford, who recently transferred to Leeds in a deal potentially reaching £45m. He will serve as the backup to starting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Rulli stated that joining such a high-performing club with elite standards was an opportunity he could not decline.
The experienced shot-stopper boasts a resume that includes appearances in the Champions League and Europa League. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Villarreal’s 2021 Europa League triumph, scoring a penalty and making the decisive save against David de Gea. An eight-time international for Argentina, Rulli was a member of the squads that secured the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America, in addition to reaching the 2026 World Cup final. Throughout his career, he has represented several European clubs, including Real Sociedad, Montpellier, and Ajax.
