Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, the prominent leader of the Izala Scholars Council, remains firm regarding his public support for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and his labeling of Christians as infidels. In a recent BBC interview, the cleric emphasized that he feels no remorse for these remarks, even amid significant backlash.
Jingir clarified that his stance was not driven by political campaigning for President Bola Tinubu but was instead rooted in his personal duties as a Muslim. He asserted that he intends to keep encouraging the Muslim community to back such a political arrangement, suggesting that past grievances have shaped his perspective. The cleric stated that he is undeterred by external criticism.
Previously, while attending a government-sponsored mass wedding in Kano for 1,500 couples, Jingir urged followers to leverage their voting power to reflect their population size. He maintained that his advocacy aligns with his religious values and disputed arguments claiming that non-Muslims hold a demographic advantage in Nigeria. These comments have sparked a national debate, pitting concerns over divisive rhetoric against the fundamental right to free expression.
