Auditors Investigate Missing Blood at Zimbabwean Hospital
Authorities in Zimbabwe have launched an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of blood from Masvingo Provincial Hospital, the province’s largest referral hospital.
A team of auditors has been deployed to the hospital to conduct a five-day audit aimed at uncovering how the blood units vanished from the laboratory.
Two hospital staff members, a laboratory scientist and a technician, have been arrested for allegedly stealing three units of blood from the hospital’s refrigerator.
Reports indicate that the duo also took empty blood tubes, raising concerns about the security of blood supplies in public hospitals. The stolen blood was reportedly meant for critical patients, including accident victims and those undergoing surgery.
Hospital staff have expressed shock and concern over the disappearance, with one worker describing it as a major security breach. The accused hospital employees, however, have denied any involvement, arguing in court that they were not the only ones with access to the blood storage facilities.
This has led authorities to expand the investigation to determine whether additional individuals were involved.
A senior hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the incident has prompted an internal security review. Concerns have also been raised about whether the stolen blood was intended for the black market or for ritual purposes, although no evidence has yet confirmed these suspicions.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has not yet issued a statement on the matter, but pressure is mounting for increased security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation, with both police and hospital administrators working to determine how the theft occurred and whether further arrests will be made.
