Trump Says Ukraine Is ‘Ready for Peace’ With Russia
US President Donald Trump revealed that he received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating his willingness to negotiate with Russia and sign a rare minerals agreement.
“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians,” Trump revealed in an address to Congress on Tuesday night while quoting from the letter
“‘My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts’,” Trump quoted Zelenskyy as writing.
Trump also stated that Zelensky expressed readiness to sign a rare earth minerals deal with the US. However, Ukraine has yet to comment on the letter.
The US president further mentioned that “serious discussions” had taken place with Russia and claimed to have “received strong signals that they are ready for peace.”
He did not specify when these talks occurred or whether he was directly involved in them.
“It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky called the White House confrontation with Trump “regrettable” following the US decision to pause military aid to Kyiv.
Zelensky said “it was time to make things right”, after Trump had accused him of not being ready to come to the negotiating table.
The Ukrainian leader also detailed the initial steps toward ending the war.
Last week’s Oval Office meeting between Zelensky and US officials was set to conclude with an agreement granting the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.
After the clash, which saw Trump accuse Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three”, the Ukrainian delegation left without signing the deal. Trump told Zelensky: “Come back when you’re ready for peace.”
