A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Diamond Tank Junction on Creek Road in Apapa, Lagos, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The incident happened at approximately 2:20 p.m. when a truck heavily laden with plywood veered out of control while executing a U-turn near the MSC facility.
Witness Joseph Agha stated that the vehicle was intercepted by security personnel, including members of the Nigerian Ports Authority and local police. These officers reportedly attempted to halt the truck to solicit fees, a common practice at that location. As the driver maneuvered to comply with the stop order, the tension on the cargo caused the securing straps to break. This shift in weight led to the vehicle crashing into a concrete culvert.
The force of the collision caused the plywood to spill onto the road, trapping and killing two people instantly. Following the disaster, the driver and his assistant abandoned the vehicle and escaped. Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reached the scene to organize traffic and move the wreckage to Liverpool Road for investigation. While the official cause remains under review, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has not yet commented on the allegations regarding the security officers.
