Senator Nenadi Usman, National Chairman of the Labour Party, asserts that Nigeria’s democratic framework remained intact during the 2015 elections because former President Goodluck Jonathan chose peace over personal power. Speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Usman highlighted that Jonathan’s decision to accept defeat before final results were confirmed prevented national instability.
Usman described this act as unique in the nation’s history, noting that Jonathan stayed true to his pledge that his position was not worth the loss of any citizen’s life. She challenged current presidential contenders to prioritize the nation over personal gain, questioning if any would demonstrate similar selflessness given the current climate of hostile political rhetoric.
Regarding the Labour Party’s future, Usman characterized it as the most organized opposition force, citing the support of the NLC and TUC. She encouraged other opposition groups to merge with the Labour Party to better challenge the ruling APC in upcoming elections. The event was attended by prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Namadi Sambo.
