Bashir Abdullahi II, an APC figure and businessman, has questioned the Kano State government’s decision to spend over ₦1.5 billion on a mass wedding for 1,500 couples. He labeled the expense a poor priority, suggesting that funds would have been better directed toward education, health, and job creation.
Speaking from Jos, Abdullahi acknowledged that helping the needy is a valid government duty, but argued that taxpayer money should yield long-term societal advantages. He emphasized that his critique is not about the couples themselves but about the efficiency of state spending amid significant local development issues.
The Kano state administration, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, defended the initiative as a fulfillment of campaign promises intended to foster social stability. The state reported that the funding provided medical screenings, dowries, business grants, and essential household items to the participants.
Abdullahi countered that such singular interventions fail to address root economic difficulties. He argued that investments in school infrastructure, teacher training, and vocational skills provide more permanent benefits to families than a one-time event. He concluded by calling on northern leadership to prioritize structural human capital development over short-term political projects.
