Activist Mahdi Shehu has publicly rebuked Islamic scholar Sheikh Sani Jingir for labeling Christians as infidels, describing the act as both reckless and incompatible with Islamic doctrine. Shehu took to the platform X to characterize the remarks as inflammatory and irresponsible.
Highlighting Quranic references such as Sura Al-Ma’ida, Shehu asserted that the cleric’s language contradicts the respectful designation of Christians as AHLIL-KITAB, or People of the Book. He cautioned that such rhetoric undermines delicate efforts to foster harmony between religious groups in Northern Nigeria.
Shehu explicitly urged the Christian community to refrain from blaming the broader Muslim population for the cleric’s outbursts. He stated that Jingir’s comments reflect a personal agenda rather than the beliefs of peace-oriented Muslims. The activist accused the cleric of using divisive language to seek political favor and attention. He concluded by suggesting that Christians should channel their grievances specifically toward Jingir and his supporters rather than generalizing their frustration against all Muslims.
