Prof. Bobby Moroe, the South African Consul-General in Nigeria, reported that visa requests from Nigerians have nearly doubled in recent months. This rise occurred despite ongoing reports regarding xenophobic violence directed at migrants in regions including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Speaking on Nigeria Info FM, Moroe maintained that his nation remains a secure location for tourism and business. He specifically refuted online rumors suggesting that South African diplomatic missions in Nigeria had ceased visa services. He stated that the country welcomes all forms of visitors and encouraged travelers to adhere to local immigration laws.
The surge in travel interest contrasts with recent tensions that led to the Nigerian government repatriating over 1,400 citizens due to safety fears. In response to the friction, which included looting and physical assaults against foreigners, Moroe advised prospective visitors to be aware of their rights and the locations of local law enforcement agencies. He emphasized that South Africa continues to value its bilateral relationship with Nigeria and expects travel between the two nations to increase.
