Amy Hunt achieved her inaugural senior international victory by winning the 100m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. This win marks the first gold medal for Great Britain during the competition held at Alexander Stadium.
Following her 200m silver medal at the Tokyo world championships and a recent Commonwealth Games 100m silver, the 24-year-old athlete successfully claimed the top spot. Hunt overcame a fifth-place position midway through the sprint to finish in 11.00 seconds. She continues to showcase her form after breaking the 11-second barrier earlier this season.
Dina Asher-Smith, the defending champion, placed fifth with a time of 11.10 seconds. Ewa Swoboda of Poland took silver, while Belgian athlete Delphine Nkansa earned bronze. The event also saw Great Britain secure a second medal on the opening day, with a silver performance in the mixed 4x400m relay by Yemi Mary John, Ben Jefferies, Charlotte Henrich, and Toby Harries, trailing only the Norwegian team.
Hunt, who trains in Padova under Marco Airale, has overcome significant physical setbacks, including a 2022 quadriceps rupture and academic commitments at Cambridge University. With this victory, she remains in contention for additional medals in the upcoming 200m and relay events.
