Barcelona confirmed on Monday that Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo has departed for Liverpool on a loan deal spanning the remainder of the season. While the Spanish champions did not disclose financial specifics, local media reports indicate Liverpool will assume responsibility for the player’s salary and holds a 55 million euro purchase option.
The 27-year-old, who extended his contract with Barcelona until 2031 last year, found himself sidelined by manager Hansi Flick as Pau Cubarsi secured a starting role. Araujo struggled for consistent playing time throughout the previous campaign, participating in only 35 matches while managing personal health challenges. Upon his return, he faced further competition from Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin.
Liverpool pursued the defender to bolster a backline currently missing the injured duo of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, compounded by Ibrahima Konate’s transfer to Real Madrid. Araujo expressed enthusiasm about joining the squad to work alongside Virgil van Dijk under the direction of new coach Andoni Iraola. In addition to Araujo, Liverpool has bolstered its defensive ranks with the acquisition of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.
