Police Restore Obasa’s Security After Withdrawing Protection for Speaker Meranda
Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is reportedly set to reclaim his position.
Sources suggest that Obasa’s security details have been reinstated, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly following his impeachment. However, despite not formally resigning, her tenure appears to be ending due to interventions from top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Over the weekend, a high-level APC meeting—including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers—reportedly concluded that Obasa’s removal was unlawful and called for his reinstatement.
While the official process for his return remains uncertain, developments suggest it is imminent.
Reports indicate that police operatives and security personnel assigned to Speaker Meranda and the Assembly have been withdrawn. Her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Ganzallo Victor, has voiced concerns over the Assembly’s security, warning that both the Speaker and the institution are now exposed.
The situation remains tense, especially after Meranda indefinitely adjourned plenary two weeks ago following an invasion of the Assembly by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.
