Russian officials have reported that a Ukrainian drone attack on the republic of Tatarstan resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, including a child. The assault, which caused 39 injuries, marks one of the most lethal strikes within Russian territory since the conflict began. The city of Nizhnekamsk, situated over 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, was the site of the attack.
This location is a significant hub for industrial activity, housing multiple oil refineries and a major petrochemical plant. While Kyiv has remained silent regarding the operation, the assault occurred over several hours, leaving social media users to circulate footage of smoke rising above the area amidst blaring sirens. Russia’s Investigative Committee claimed that both industrial sites and residential areas were struck, emphasizing that non-combatants were among the victims.
Rustam Minnikhanov, the leader of Tatarstan, addressed the tragedy by offering condolences, and the region has entered a period of mourning. Although Moscow reported intercepting over 450 drones, the strike underscores the escalating reach of Ukrainian long-range capabilities. Conversely, Russia continues its own aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities, with recent reports indicating significant casualties in Kyiv and Kharkiv due to Russian missiles and artillery.
