Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, a dedicated detective and father of five, was assassinated in August 2023 shortly after seeking critical evidence in an ongoing investigation. Police documents and evidence obtained by the BBC indicate that members of the South African military special forces were responsible for his death. Mathipa had been investigating the mysterious disappearance of Abdella Abadigga, an alleged Islamic State militant who was reportedly acting as an intelligence asset before going rogue.
Court filings reveal that vehicles linked to the disappearance of Abadigga were registered to Peters Communications Trust, a front organization for the military’s special forces. Tracking data and CCTV footage place these vehicles, along with Major Sunnybooi Wambi, at the scene of the abduction. When Mathipa pursued this evidence, he was intercepted and killed while driving near Pretoria. Law enforcement officials reported that the black BMW tailing him was also tied to the same military front company.
Following his murder, police received ominous warnings that any further investigators assigned to the case would be killed. Despite these threats and subsequent charges against twelve military personnel—including high-ranking officers—justice remains elusive. Many of the accused, including Wambi and Brigadier General Solomon Lechoenyo, have refused to comply with bail revocation orders, and the military has failed to surrender them to authorities. To date, no trial date has been established, leaving the families of the victims and the public questioning the accountability of South Africa’s security apparatus.
