Super Falcons miss automatic World Cup spot following 1-0 loss to Cameroon

Nigeria’s Super Falcons failed to secure direct entry to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons were defeated 1-0 by Cameroon in their WAFCON 2026 match, with a 19th-minute strike by Nyadjou deciding the outcome. Despite constant pressure from the Nigerian side, Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina delivered an exceptional performance, recording eight saves to protect her team’s lead.

This loss prevents Nigeria from earning an automatic qualifying spot for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Under current regulations, only the four semi-finalists secure direct entry to the tournament. As a quarter-final loser, Nigeria must now compete in the African play-offs against other eliminated teams from the same stage. The victor of these play-offs will advance to the inter-confederation tournament, providing an alternative path to the World Cup. While the journey to Brazil is now significantly more challenging, the Super Falcons still maintain a possibility of qualification.
