The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has officially categorized Nigeria as a full authoritarian state, drawing from a recent assessment by the Human Rights Foundation. Consequently, the party is advocating for international sanctions against government officials accused of eroding democratic processes while encouraging voters to replace the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
Abubakar Yusuf, the national spokesperson for the APM, asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has centralized power and undermined institutional independence. The party claims that security forces, judicial systems, and anti-corruption bodies are being weaponized to silence opposition and dissent.
The APM has petitioned global entities, including the UN, EU, and various Western nations, to impose measures such as asset freezes and travel restrictions on officials perceived to be obstructing democracy. Their allegations include the suppression of free speech, with reports suggesting that nearly 100 journalists have faced detention or physical violence.
Furthermore, the party detailed alarming figures regarding national security, alleging that hundreds of thousands have lost their lives and millions have been abducted due to persistent violence. The APM also voiced deep skepticism regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its leadership, fearing the 2027 polls will lack credibility.
Concluding their statement, the APM warned that the combination of economic distress and democratic decline poses a significant risk to regional stability. They urged citizens and civil society to organize within legal bounds to prepare for a leadership change in the upcoming election cycle.
