A severe flood hit several districts in Minna, Niger State, resulting in over N100 million in property damage and forcing numerous families to flee their homes. The disaster followed a powerful rainstorm that struck early Saturday morning, impacting areas including Imani in Minna South and the M.I. Wushishi neighborhood.
Abdullahi Idris, the former Niger State NUJ Chairman, confirmed the extent of the damage alongside local community representatives. Reports indicate that many homes were underwater, while essential belongings, cars, fences, and household electronics were ruined.
Areas such as Tunga, Maitunbi, Chanchaga, Shango, and the M.I. Wushishi Housing estate experienced significant destruction. In the housing estate, the floodwaters swept through properties, damaging a local mosque and an Islamic school while leaving debris in its wake.
Locals pointed to a lack of proper drainage systems as a primary cause of the vulnerability during heavy rain. Furthermore, residents expressed worry over a dam linked to an individual named Captain Taylor, which they believe has intensified flooding issues recently. The affected citizens are now calling on the Niger State government and charitable organizations for immediate aid and a long-term fix for the region’s drainage problems to prevent future catastrophes.
