President Bola Tinubu recently intervened in a move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze the Osun State Government’s bank account. Tinubu publicly directed the EFCC to seek a court order to lift the freeze, expressing personal embarrassment over the timing. He clarified that while the EFCC has a duty to investigate, federal agencies must avoid the appearance of interfering in local elections. Osun remains a politically significant state for the APC, having previously witnessed electoral losses for the party under Governor Ademola Adeleke. The Adeleke family possesses deep political roots and cultural influence through figures like the musician Davido, making the state a complex arena for electoral competition.
The incident highlights a need for greater coordination within the federal government. While it is unclear if the EFCC acted on its own or through external influence, the President must ensure that federal institutions are not used for partisan ends. To protect his credibility, Tinubu must hold those in his circle accountable for their actions. Ultimately, the stability of his administration depends on preventing federal power from overshadowing the democratic process, ensuring that the people of Osun can choose their leader without interference from Abuja.
