Kaduna University ASUU Embarks on Indefinite Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University branch, has commenced an indefinite strike starting February 18 due to unresolved welfare issues. The decision was announced in a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri. The statement, released to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna on Tuesday, noted that the action was approved by the union’s National Executive Council. “The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch wishes to notify the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request of the congress of the branch to proceed on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike with effect from today, Feb.18, 2025. “Congress unanimously and vehemently rejected the promises from the government of Kaduna State for lack of substance, specific details, and actionable timelines on the payment of the outstanding entitlements to members,” the statement said. The union highlighted several unresolved welfare concerns, including the non-payment of withheld salaries, which comprise 60 percent of September 2017 and the entire period from May to September 2022. Other grievances include the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances since 2016, outstanding promotion arrears, and unpaid supervision allowances for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme. Additionally, the union raised issues regarding Group Life Assurance benefits and other entitlements for deceased members, non-remittance of pension contributions from 2009 to 2019, and the failure to implement the 25 percent and 35 percent wage awards. micro bikini kandikush71 Another key demand is the restoration of the university’s autonomy.
