The governments of Nigeria and Canada have officially entered into an air transport deal intended to simplify travel operations between the two nations. Presidential aide Olusegun Dada announced the development on X this Friday.
This expanded agreement allows multiple airlines to initiate scheduled flight services, representing a significant progression in bilateral aviation, economic collaboration, and tourism. The arrangement includes provisions for 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly cargo flights for carriers from each country.
A notable feature is the inclusion of Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights for all-cargo flights, which permits cargo carriers to move goods between foreign locations as part of their broader service routes. This update builds upon a framework established in 2014 and formalised in early 2025.
Beyond simplifying logistics and reducing travel costs, the deal aims to foster stronger commercial and educational links. With more than 25,000 Nigerians currently using Canadian study permits, the initiative is positioned to improve personal connections and support international student mobility.
