The Delta State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has voiced apprehension regarding the rapid turnover of police leadership in the state. A statement released by Chairman Derrick Agberen and Publicity Secretary Nosa Godswill highlighted that the state has seen three different Commissioners of Police appointed in just seven months. The group suggests this pattern reflects unusual interest in the position given the current security climate.
While acknowledging the internal autonomy of the Nigeria Police Force, the organization noted that such frequent rotations threaten operational stability. Nevertheless, the CDHR welcomed the arrival of the new Commissioner, Samuel Erale Etaifo. They view his appointment as a move toward better regional equity, noting that leadership roles in security agencies have often lacked broad representation. The group expressed approval that Etaifo hails from the South-South region, arguing that such inclusivity fosters greater public trust in security institutions.
The CDHR called on Commissioner Etaifo to prioritize community partnerships, protect fundamental human rights, and maintain strict discipline within the force. The organization pledged to support the new leadership in efforts to bolster safety and ensure professional police conduct across Delta State.
