Authorities in Lagos State have taken 27 individuals into custody for the alleged destruction of structural elements on the bridge connecting Alakija and FESTAC Town. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed that the arrests occurred during an overnight operation led by the Rapid Response Squad and the Kick Against Indiscipline unit.
The crackdown was initiated after inspectors discovered damage beneath the bridge while conducting a sweep ordered by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This broader mandate aims to clear the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of illegal activities such as roadside markets, unauthorized parking, and environmental hazards.
Official reports indicate that the detainees systematically removed steel bars, cables, and other vital components, effectively compromising the bridge’s structural stability. The state government condemned these actions as a significant danger to the public and a waste of taxpayer-funded infrastructure.
All 27 suspects are scheduled to face prosecution under existing state laws. Officials reiterated their intent to safeguard public assets and vowed to persist with aggressive enforcement against any groups harming the safety of the community.
