A sudden 90-second power failure at a Network Rail operations centre in Manchester led to severe disruptions for rail passengers. Although the outage was brief, it exposed potential vulnerabilities in the centralized control system used to manage railway infrastructure across North West England.

Network Rail, the public body responsible for tracks and signals, faced significant scrutiny after its backup power supply failed to activate as intended. Because the facility controls critical signalling—the rail equivalent of traffic lights—trains across the region were forced to halt.
