Placebo Frontman Faces Charges for Calling Italian Prime Minister a ‘Fascist Nazi’
Brian Molko, the lead singer of the British rock band Placebo, has been officially charged with defamation for allegedly insulting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a live concert in Turin.
The 52-year-old musician was sued by Meloni in August 2023 after allegedly calling her a “fascist” and a “Nazi,” as well as referring to her as a “piece of s**t” while performing at the Sonic Park festival in Stupinigi.
Video footage appears to show Molko shouting “f**k you” at the Prime Minister during the concert.
In March 2024, reports indicated that prosecutors in Turin were awaiting confirmation of Molko’s domicile, as he resides in London. In February 2025, Italy’s justice ministry approved the prosecutors’ request to formally charge him.
Meloni, known for her far-right political views and policies, is Italy’s first female Prime Minister.
Molko’s legal issues arise from an investigation into possible defamation and “contempt of the institution” following a complaint filed by police who were present at the concert. If found guilty, he could face a fine of up to €5,000 (£4,200), though a prison sentence is considered unlikely.
In Italy, defamation of public figures, including government officials, can carry a penalty of up to three years in prison.
This incident reflects a broader trend, as Meloni has previously pursued legal action against public figures over critical remarks. In 2023, journalist Roberto Saviano was fined for calling her a “b***h” in response to her stance on migration.
Since Meloni took office, Italy has witnessed a notable increase in lawsuits against individuals for their public statements.
