Pope Francis is receiving treatment for a “complex clinical situation” and will remain in the hospital for as long as necessary, the Vatican has announced.

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday to undergo tests and treatment for bronchitis.

In an update on Monday, the Vatican revealed that the Pope has a “polymicrobial infection” of his respiratory tract, which has necessitated a change in his treatment plan.

Prior to his hospitalization, Pope Francis had been experiencing bronchitis symptoms for several days and had delegated officials to read his prepared speeches at events.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told reporters on Monday that the Pope remains in good spirits despite his condition.

A short statement on his condition said: “All tests carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospitalisation.”

The pontiff’s weekly general audience, typically held every Wednesday, has been canceled for this week, the Vatican statement added.

A further update on the Pope’s condition is expected later on Monday, according to spokesman Matteo Bruni.

Over the weekend, the Vatican reported that the Pope was in stable condition and had been advised to take “complete rest” to support his recovery.

Due to his illness, the Pope was unable to deliver his regular Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square or lead a special mass for artists as part of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year celebrations.

Last Wednesday, the Pope delegated a priest to read part of his speech due to his health struggles.

He also held meetings at his Vatican residence last week in an effort to rest and recover.

This is not the first time the Pope has faced health challenges. He spent three nights at the same hospital in March 2023 for bronchitis treatment.

In December 2023, he was forced to cancel his trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit due to another illness.

Throughout his life, Pope Francis has dealt with various health issues, including having part of one of his lungs removed at the age of 21.
