The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has formally requested that both the federal and state governments enhance employee welfare by establishing a living wage and fostering better working conditions nationwide. Speaking at the Nigeria Workers’ Rights Summit in Birnin Kebbi, Comrade Nuhu Toro, on behalf of the TUC National Chairman, emphasized that the workforce requires tangible results rather than rhetorical commitments. He asserted that a living wage is fundamental to elevating the quality of life for citizens. Furthermore, Toro advocated for an end to labor casualization, noting that job stability is key to boosting productivity and national economic development.
During the event, Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris showcased his administration’s focus on healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture. He noted that the state has disbursed over ₦16 billion in retirement gratuities to support former public servants. Governor Idris expressed openness to re-evaluating the state’s current minimum wage and implementing further initiatives to benefit staff. The summit, hosted at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi, saw participation from notable figures including NUT National President Titus Amba, former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, and various labor and government officials.
