European football associations are still weighing a potential boycott of major competitions, including the World Cup, as Uefa maintains that Fifa’s recent dismissal of the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan is insufficient. The English FA has formally rescinded its support for Fifa President Gianni Infantino, citing deep concerns over controversial proposals to auction stakes in international tournaments to private entities.
Uefa asserts that despite the cancellation of the FFE scheme, their demands have not been met. The governing body insists that Infantino must provide concrete guarantees that such attempts to commercialize football will never recur. Uefa has reaffirmed that it no longer trusts the leadership of the Fifa president, dismissing recent internal expressions of support from his subordinates as meaningless.
While Fifa acknowledged that errors were made during the FFE planning phase, there has been little individual accountability. Internal dissent persists, notably from chief operating officer Kevin Lamour, who openly criticized the project before being sidelined from key meetings. Meanwhile, Infantino appears to be consolidating power among his loyalists, leaving Uefa in a difficult position as it struggles to muster enough global support to force his resignation or trigger a successful vote of no confidence.
With a presidential election approaching next March, Uefa faces the challenge of either finding a consensus challenger to oppose Infantino or resorting to the drastic measure of a tournament boycott. As the debate intensifies, the rift between European football leaders and the current Fifa administration continues to widen.
