At least 28 migrant bodies have been discovered in a mass grave in the southeastern Libyan desert.

The grave, located north of Kufra, was found just days after another mass grave containing 19 bodies was uncovered on a farm in the same city.

According to Libya’s attorney general, officials made the discovery during a raid on a human trafficking site, where authorities also rescued 76 migrants who had been detained and tortured.

The attorney general’s office, in a statement on Facebook, confirmed the arrest of one Libyan and two foreign nationals in connection with the crime.

“There was a gang whose members deliberately deprived illegal migrants of their freedom, tortured them, and subjected them to cruel, humiliating, and inhumane treatment,” the statement said.

The search operation in Kufra, located over 1,700 kilometers (1,056 miles) from Libya’s capital, Tripoli, is still ongoing.

According to the attorney general, the recovered bodies have been sent for autopsy, with investigators exploring possible connections to smuggling networks.

Authorities are also recording testimonies from survivors to aid in the investigation.

Last year, another mass grave containing at least 65 migrant bodies was discovered in southwestern Libya, an incident the International Organization for Migration (IOM) described as “deeply shocking.”
