Professor Jason Arday has stepped down from his position at the University of Cambridge, effective immediately. His resignation follows an inquiry initiated by the university into his academic credentials and honorary titles. Arday, who made history in 2023 as the youngest Black professor appointed at the institution, cited the toll of public scrutiny and personal attacks as the reason for his departure.
The controversy began when Nathan Cofnas, a researcher previously dismissed from a Cambridge role, alleged that Arday’s scholarly work contained significant plagiarism. Cofnas claimed that software analysis showed various sections of Arday’s writing were copied with minor alterations. Arday has admitted to errors in his earlier publications but strongly rejected characterizations of himself as a dishonest person. He attributed some writing inconsistencies to his autism, noting that he often utilized mimicry to process information, and suggested the criticism was part of a coordinated campaign against him.
The university maintains that its investigation must remain thorough and compliant with employment laws. Meanwhile, Jesus College has launched a separate, parallel process regarding the matter. Despite the resignation, Arday stated he intends to return to his work in the future once he has had time to recover.
