Israel Strikes Hezbollah Tunnels in Lebanon Used for Weapon Smuggling
The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it conducted an airstrike on a tunnel located along the Syria-Lebanon border.
According to the military, the tunnel was used by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah for smuggling weapons.
Israeli “aircraft conducted a precise intelligence based strike on an underground tunnel crossing from Syrian territory into Lebanese territory that was used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons,” the military said in a statement.
It added that it additionally struck “several other Hezbollah sites” in Lebanon.
This development comes just a day after Israel targeted a weapons depot in southern Syria used by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Reports indicate that a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been in place since late November, following over a year of hostilities, including two months of intense conflict.
Despite the truce, Israel has continued to conduct strikes in Lebanon, while both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement.
As part of the ceasefire deal, Lebanon’s military was expected to deploy in the south alongside UN peacekeepers, while the Israeli army was set to withdraw over a 60-day period.
