Gabriel Ologunwa, the lead for Global Expansions and Payment Partnerships at Flutterwave, recently addressed the Nigeria Fintech Forum to explore the path toward regional financial integration. He shared the stage with various industry experts and policymakers to discuss the evolution of cross-border transactions.
Ologunwa expressed optimism, stating that the barriers hindering regional trade are becoming easier to overcome. Although fragmented systems and regulatory hurdles have traditionally hampered progress, he noted that modern financial technology and stablecoin adoption are rapidly increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
He emphasized that the necessary technology is ready for implementation. By fostering stronger cooperation between regulators and private companies, Ologunwa believes Africa could establish a real-time, affordable payment network in the near future. He identified frameworks like the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol as vital foundations for this growth.
For small and medium-sized enterprises, the goal is to create a unified platform that simplifies collections, payouts, and compliance. Flutterwave currently provides such a solution to help businesses scale across borders without the typical complexities. Ultimately, simplifying trade for smaller merchants is essential for boosting Africa’s economic development.
