This cooling trend follows a significant summer season characterized by numerous broken temperature records. Recently, the country reached its 34th day with temperatures hitting 30C or higher, matching the record established in 1995. Forecasters anticipate this benchmark could be surpassed next week as another potential heatwave begins to form.
Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of north-east Scotland on Wednesday. Heavy, slow-moving thunderstorms are expected between 10:00 and 21:00 BST, which may result in up to 50mm of rainfall, flash flooding, and disruptions to transport systems. Gusty winds are also projected to affect Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and northern England throughout the night.
By Thursday, temperatures are forecast to settle between 15C and 24C, aligning closer to typical August averages. While this may feel cooler to some, it will likely provide more comfortable conditions for much of the UK. Looking ahead, some models suggest a return of high pressure next week, which could see south-east England exceeding 30C once again, although long-range forecasts remain subject to change.
