Arsene Wenger, who serves as Fifa’s chief of global football development, has publicly supported the decision to abandon plans for private equity investment in major tournaments. The proposal, originally championed by Fifa president Gianni Infantino, intended to establish a commercial entity to oversee events like the World Cup, allowing external investors to purchase shares.
While Infantino had offered $40 million to each of Fifa’s 211 member associations to secure their support, the initiative collapsed following intense backlash. This included threats from Uefa’s 55 member nations to boycott all Fifa-run competitions. Wenger clarified that he had no involvement in the strategic design of the project and only learned of it via news outlets. He stated that the withdrawal was vital to maintaining an independent governing body rooted in transparency and integrity.
The fallout has affected senior leadership. Carlos Cordeiro, a top aide to Infantino, resigned in protest, labeling the plan a threat to the long-term future of the sport. Meanwhile, Fifa secretary general Mattias Grafstrom acknowledged the internal turmoil in a memo to staff, urging them to remain professional and committed to the organization’s core mission despite the political instability caused by the failed proposal.
