During a 3-3 pre-season exhibition match against Rennes at Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex RAMS Park, Victor Osimhen turned down the opportunity to serve as captain for Galatasaray. The Nigerian striker opened the scoring for his side with a powerful header following an accurate cross from Gabriel Sara.
The situation regarding the armband emerged in the 74th minute after primary captain Abdülkerim Bardakcı was substituted. Bardakcı attempted to pass the leadership role to Osimhen as he left the pitch. However, the forward politely rejected the gesture and directed the armband toward teammate Yunus Akgün. Although Akgün was surprised and tried to insist that Osimhen take the responsibility, the former African Footballer of the Year stood by his decision.
Manager Okan Buruk had previously signaled his intent for Osimhen to take on a leadership role within the squad following the exit of Mauro Icardi.
