ECOWAS Formalizes Exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic but Grants Citizens Free Movement

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formally implemented the suspension of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc following military coups in these nations.

However, despite these suspensions, ECOWAS has clarified that citizens from these countries will retain their rights to free movement within member states, ensuring they can travel, reside, and trade without any restrictions across the region.

This decision was reached after a meeting of the bloc, reinforcing ECOWAS’s firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government. While the suspension limits the three countries’ participation in ECOWAS activities, it ensures minimal disruption to the everyday lives of their citizens.

ECOWAS has consistently condemned military takeovers and emphasized its commitment to promoting democratic governance and constitutional rule in the region. The bloc continues to advocate for the restoration of civilian leadership in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, while striving to mitigate the negative impact of the suspensions on ordinary people.
