Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently announced that Abuja will host its first-ever New Year fireworks display at the City Gate. This initiative aims to align the Nigerian capital with the celebratory customs observed in major global cities.
The announcement followed a visit by Wike to a neglected recreation site near the old Life Camp Roundabout. He designated the park’s redevelopment an urgent project, promising to restore the area with modern amenities for sports and leisure. Wike criticized previous administrations for allowing the park to fall into disrepair, emphasizing that his team would bypass standard bureaucracy to complete the renovation quickly.
This initiative follows a commendation from First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who praised the FCT Administration for its success in the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Green Nigeria Challenge. The First Lady recognized the government’s efforts in transforming the City Gate into a popular public attraction, a move Wike credited as inspiration for the broader effort to rehabilitate abandoned green spaces across the capital.
