The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals (AHPA) have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honor previous commitments. They are demanding the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and the immediate appointment of management boards for Federal Health Institutions. The unions warn that failure to address these issues, which were part of a February 2026 settlement, could spark new industrial action.
National leaders Kabiru Ado Sani and Martin Egbanubi noted that while other ministries have seen their boards inaugurated, the health sector remains overlooked. This oversight has hindered institutional accountability and delayed essential tasks like the accreditation of training programs and the approval of professional guidelines. Without active governing councils, chief executives are left to manage complex administrative burdens alone.
The unions stressed that addressing these governance gaps is vital to maintaining stability in the health sector before political focus shifts toward the 2027 elections. They urged the government to act quickly to prevent further disruption to public healthcare services for citizens.
