UI Students Protest 82-Day Power Outage at UCH
Students from the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State have organized a peaceful protest in response to the 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, where UI medical students undergo training.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) disconnected the power supply to UCH in March 2024 over unpaid electricity bills.
Similarly, in November 2024, the company once again cut off the hospital’s power supply for the same reason, leading to protests by the family members of patients.
Early on Wednesday morning, January 22, students from the University of Ibadan staged a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction with the ongoing power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH). The students voiced their concerns over the impact of the power cut on both the hospital’s operations and their medical training.
The President of the Students’ Union, SU, Bolaji Aweda, said: “We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected.
“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.
“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power.”
