Intense rainfall on Saturday caused sudden flooding in Damaturu, Nguru, Machina, and Bursari, leading to residential property damage and an immediate emergency response from the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). Reports of flooding emerged after local leaders and security officials notified the agency of widespread inundation.
In Damaturu, hard-hit areas include Moduri, Abbari Sabon Kwalta, Malari Sabon Kwalta, Pompomari, Sumsumma, and Nayinawa. Nguru reported flooding across nine wards, while Bursari and Machina experienced destruction in neighborhoods like Turbangini, Dinani/Lawanti, and Hausari. SEMA is currently conducting verification efforts to gauge the full extent of household displacement and potential casualties.
A specialized team consisting of SEMA staff, local government officials, and volunteers has been dispatched to identify urgent humanitarian requirements. This event follows recent warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency regarding elevated flood risks in the state. Residents in Nayinawa had previously expressed frustration over inadequate drainage systems that contribute to seasonal property damage. SEMA has issued safety advisories, encouraging citizens to avoid floodwaters and practice good hygiene to mitigate health risks while the agency concludes its formal report.
