With less than two weeks remaining until the Osun State governorship election, the Ademola Adeleke Campaign Council has raised concerns about a purported scheme to detain 46 leaders belonging to the Accord Party to stop them from engaging in the electoral process.
Kolapo Alimi, the Deputy Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, informed reporters in Osogbo on Sunday that his group is in possession of a list of opposition members targeted for apprehension on fabricated charges. According to Alimi, these individuals are intended to be moved to Abuja throughout the election window.
Alimi urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order local police units, the State Criminal Investigation Department, and visiting squads from Abuja to stop the harassment and detention of political rivals. He stated that the council would not remain silent while security resources are allegedly leveraged for political ends.
Furthermore, the campaign condemned the detention of Taofeek Akinyemi in Ikire, labeling the move a political maneuver. The council noted that Akinyemi was taken into custody after sharing a video documenting an attack he survived at his place of business. They argue that although he had previously reported the attack to multiple security agencies, he has now been unfairly treated as a suspect rather than a victim. The organization is demanding his prompt release or for the matter to be handled through a proper court proceeding.
As of now, the police have not issued a public statement regarding these claims.
