A newly formed group of 100 Nigerians, known as G-100, is pushing for opposition parties to select a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The coalition argues that a fractured opposition lacks the strength to challenge the ruling party. To facilitate this, the group intends to host a National Council of Opposition Leaders within the next two weeks.
In an open letter, the G-100 stated that participants at the council will be asked whether their political ambitions serve personal gain or the national interest. The signatories include notable figures such as Salihu Moh. Lukman, Nnena Ukeje, and Simon Achuba. This group plans to hold discussions with prominent political leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi.
The coalition attributes Nigeria’s current difficulties to structural failures that prioritize loyalty and patronage over merit. They emphasized that a nation cannot improve its economy while ignoring its political framework. By invoking historical instances of political intervention, the group asserted that democracies weaken when leaders become disorganized and prioritize individual goals over democratic principles.
The upcoming council aims to build upon the objectives set during the April 2026 Ibadan Declaration. The G-100 is also calling on labor, clergy, and professional organizations to advocate for change, arguing that citizens must remain vigilant to protect their liberties. The group insists that no individual possesses an inherent right to power and that effective leadership must be earned through public service.
