The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its sanitation enforcement by closing various shopping centers and markets within the Ikotun-Igando region. This move follows ongoing failures to manage waste correctly in these commercial areas. LAWMA’s Project WISE West team led the operation on Saturday, specifically targeting establishments along the LASU-Igando Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area.
Officials stated that these businesses were repeatedly warned about dumping trash on road medians but failed to comply despite multiple notices. Similar enforcement recently improved cleanliness in the Yaba-Ojuelegba area, prompting the agency to expand its efforts. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, confirmed that additional notices are now being issued to businesses along the Ojuelegba-Lawanson-Itire corridor.
Among the sites sealed on Saturday were Owode Market, Omo Oba Shopping Complex, Oja Oba Market, and several others. These locations will stay shut until they demonstrate full compliance with state environmental standards. Dr. Gbadegesin warned that illegal dumping remains a direct violation of law and urged business owners to utilize authorized waste management providers exclusively.
