Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, recently emphasized that Nigerian ports must be recognized as vital national infrastructure rather than simple docking stations. Represented by Kenechi Okaeze at the 26th Maritime Correspondents Organisation of Nigeria conference in Port Harcourt, Oyetola argued that port efficiency is the cornerstone of the nation’s industrial development.
Highlighting global hubs like Singapore and Rotterdam, the minister noted that Nigeria must similarly prioritize logistics to unlock the potential of its Special Economic Zones. He compared a Special Economic Zone lacking an efficient port to an airport missing a runway, stating that such projects cannot succeed without proper maritime connectivity.
Oyetola further explained that true port optimization requires more than physical expansion; it necessitates advanced technology, improved governance, and faster cargo processing. He warned that delays harm competitiveness and deter investors who prioritize reliability and turnaround time over sheer vessel volume.
To address these challenges, the government is focusing on channel dredging and digital integration through the Port Community System. By reducing manual processes, these reforms aim to increase transparency and lower business costs. The minister also advocated for continued public-private partnerships, pointing to the Lekki Deep Sea Port as a successful model for boosting national capacity and supply chain resilience.
